KURIOS in Mark

Below, we give a brief examination the Greek word often transliterated as KURIOS in all of its occurrences in the book of Mark, in order to see what evidence exists that any of such occurrences are actual replacements for the Holy Name.

===============
Mark 1:3

OF HIM,

It should be obvious that this scripture is citing Isaiah 40:3, and that the Holy Name has been changed in the Greek text to “Kuriou”. Note that the word “Kuriou” is anarthrous, it has no definite article. All through the book of Mark, when the Holy Name has been changed to a form of Kurios, it is left without a definite article, thus signifying that it is a personal name, and not just a title. Almost all translations hide this fact, however, by rendering the anarthrous “Kurios” as “the Lord”. However, there are several reasons why Kurios may not have a definite article, so we cannot say that just because Kurios may not have definite article, that Kurios has replaced the Holy Name. In this case, however, we can definitely say that here someone has changed the Holy Name to “Kuriou”.

SABBATH.

Here “Kurios” does not have the definite article, but it is apparent from the context that it is not being used as personal name, but as a title. It is designated the Son of the Man, David, as being “master” of the sabbath. It is not being used in the sense of Jesus’ being the “lord of…” someone, or a people, of his mastery of the sabbath.

4160 2532 1653 4771_3

Here we have “ho kurios” — the Lord — as being designated the Lord of the one to whom Jesus was speaking. Thus, Jesus was referring to himself, not as Yahweh, but as “the Lord”. Mark relates that this one then “went his way, and began to proclaim in Decapolis how Jesus had done great things for him.” — Mark 5:20.

Here “Lord” is anarthrous, because it is being used in the sense of “sir”. It is similar to saying in English, “Yes, sir.”

Mark 11:3

Here we “ho kurios” — the Lord — evidently leaving “of you” to be understood. “Ho Kurios” does not mean Yahweh in this verse.

Here “Kuriou” is anarthrous, being a reference to Psalm 118:26. The Holy Name has definitely been changed in this verse to “Kuriou”.

VINEYARD TO OTHERS.
0290 0243

“Ho Kurios” here refers to the one being spoken of in parable (representing Jesus himself) as the Lord over the vineyard. Although “Ho Kurios” does refer to Yahweh in this verse, “Ho Kurios” in this verse does not represent a replacement of the Holy Name. In other words, Yahweh is the owner of the vineyard, but “Ho Kurios” is not a replacement of the Holy Name.

Here “Kuriou” is anarthrous, and the Holy Name has definitely been replaced by KURIOU in this verse, as it is a reference to Psalm 118:22,23.

“KURIOS” here is anarthrous, being a reference to Deuteronomy 6:4. The Holy Name has definitely been replaced in this verse by “KURIOS”.

3588 2479 4771_1

“KURION” is anarthrous, and is a reference to Deuteronomy 6:5. The Holy Name has definitely been replaced by “KURION” in this verse.

5270 3588 4228 4771_1

The first instance, shown as “KURIOS” above, is anarthrous; being a reference to Psalm 110:1, in the first instance, we definitely find that the Holy Name has been changed to “KURIOS”. The second instance, however, is not anarthrous, but prophetically refers to the glorified Messiah as the Lord of David.

2532 3588 4183 3793 0191 0846_3 2234

Here KURION is anarthrous, being used as a quoted title of “Lord”, and from the context, we can see that “the Lord of me” of verse 36 is meant; KURION is not here a replacement of the Holy Name.

===============
Mark 13:20

HE CHOSE HE SHORTENED THE DAYS.
1586 2856 3588 2250

“KURIOS” above is anarthrous and it is “highly” probable this is here being used as a replacement for the Holy Name, as the name of “God” who is referred to in verse 19. We would list this a “highly” probable replacement of the Holy Name, but not definite, although Jesus does appear to being referring to Yahweh as described in Psalm 107:26-30; Isaiah 24; and other places.

MIDNIGHT OR OF COCKCROWING OR EARLY IN THE MORNING,
3317 2228 0219 2228 4404

Here we have “ho kurios”, not as a replacement of the Holy Name, but as the master of the house.

====================
Mark 16:19
ho men oun kurios ieesous meta to laleesai

1537 1188 3588 2316

While the above may not have been part of the original, nevertheless, “Ho … Kurios” is separated above by “men oun”; it is not being used in this instance as a change of the Holy Name, but it simply designates Jesus as “the Lord”.

Although we highly doubt that the above words were part of the original writing of Mark, “the Lord” in this verse is not anarthrous, and does not signify that the Holy Name as being changed “TOU KURIOU”.
